As our country deals with civil unrest one word continues to be in the forefront of my mind. RESPECT!
I run a leadership practice and I teach about values driven behavior. Core values are critical in every organization and in every human being. The core values I tried to instill in my teams since 2005 were Respect, Trust and Commitment. RTC. The most important core value is respect. It is what every human wants. It is what every human needs. To be heard. To be seen. To be valued.
For hundreds of years black people have been disrespected, but we didn’t see it so we could disregard it. We could sweep it under the rug. However, since the video of George Floyd’s death we all, all races, saw the injustice that was done to him. We now realize that this was not a one-off incident. How many “George Floyd’s” died unjustly since America was founded? How many people of color have been unjustly killed or incarcerated over the last 445 years in our country?
When you get the chance watch the movie Just Mercy with Michael B. Jordan or read the book. It will help you see the injustice served on a black man in Alabama. Riveting. Eye opening.
What is the answer? Respect! We must respect EVERY human being. We must get to know each other. We are all God’s children.
“People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.” – MLK
God help our country. We all need to lean in and do our part.
