Today’s topic was “How to Hire Top Talent”. We had 30 attendees that stayed to the end of our one hour webcast. There was good diversity of people, including several industry experts, that made for a very compelling discussion on how to recruit talent for your company in this challenging environment.

Marleen Jansen gets the “Long Distance Award” for the person that joined the webcast from the farthest away. Marleen is an HR specialist at Seventrees and joined us from the Netherlands. She added great insight into the issues they are dealing with in her country and the surrounding areas. 

Thanks to special guest Amy Ancira. She is the Managing Director of HireBetter in Austin, TX with over 20 years of experience in executive search and recruitment in various industries. Here are some of the nuggets shared by Amy:

  1. “Purpose over paycheck”. People want to work for more than the money. What is “The Why?”
  2. What development programs are in place for your employees?
  3. “Build communities in the workplace”.
  4. A common mistake in hiring is being “reactive”. When you lose a key employee you quickly post the job to fill the position. You need to plan strategically. 
  5. “Command and Control” leaders are a thing of the past because “people vote with their feet” by leaving these types of bosses. 
  6. Working from home is here to stay. 
  7. Recruit to your core values. 
  8. Use “behavioral interviewing”. Ex. “Tell me about a time when you…”

Andy Dinkin is the owner of The Seals Franchising and he shared some keys to his success in hiring in this competitive market:

  1. Write better ads in Indeed and LinkedIn. Make them more personalized. 
  2. Create a culture that people want to be a part of. He surveyed his employees to see what is and isn’t important to them. 
  3. Recommended books: The Ultimate Sales Machine by Chet Holmes and Who by Geoff Smart and Randy Street. 

Chuck Garcia of the Climb Leadership Institute shared some great insights as well:

  1. Companies are looking for leadership with three things: 1) Grace under fire, 2) Empathy, and 3) Conflict resolution skills. 
  2. Emotional Intelligence finally made the list of Top 5 Soft Skills for leaders on LinkedIn. They are Creativity, Persuasion, Collaboration, Adaptability and Emotional Intelligence. 
  3. He recommends a blend of assessments (AVA Assessment was suggested) and intuition in the hiring process. When the assessment matches the intuition of the hiring team you have a good chance of success. 

Ray Tomasco is the Managing Partner of reesmarx. They are in the business of global talent acquisition. Ray stressed that “it all starts with leadership”. Leadership needs to be flexible and should create an environment where people can “get the project done” without limiting benefits like PTO. “Need based benefits”.
